United Stated Strategic Command (USSTRACOM) Systems and Mission Support
(USAMS) Missile Warning
Brief Description: The USAMS Missile Warning Team is comprised
of 14 personnel working in four locations, Vandenberg Air Force Base (AFB), CA,
Offutt AFB, NE Peterson AFB, CO, and Schriever AFB, CO. Team members are from
Software Engineering Services (SES), and Ciber, Inc. and provide subject matter
expertise (SME) support for Strategic Missile Warning (SMW), Theater Missile
Warning (TMW), Shared Early Warning (SEW), and Missile Event Analysis.
The Strategic Missile Warning Section supports United States Strategic Command
(USSTRATCOM) and their customer North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD)
in the employment of Integrated Tactical Warning and Attack Assessment (ITW/AA).
ITW/AA is the identification, assessment, tracking, and warning notification of
intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) threatening the United States. Team
personnel are responsible for updating plans, directives, and instructions;
drafting and interpreting policy; identifying and coordinating issue resolution;
and interfacing with a multitude of Department of Defense, Joint Staff, Homeland
Defense, and defense contractor organizations.
The Theater Missile Warning Section supports USSTRATCOM and their customers the
regional combatant commands (COCOM), including USCENTCOM, USEUCOM, USNORTHCOM,
and USPACOM, in the employment of TMW. This support includes similar duties as
the SMW section with the addition of working with COCOMs and sponsored foreign
governments to provide Shared Early Warning (SEW). Team personnel also perform
Theater Event System (TES) Health Checks to the 21 COCOM Tier I sites located
in 12 countries. These health checks are used to verify proper configuration
and operation of TES and SEW equipment, with fix actions being accomplished by
team members as required.
The Missile Event Analysis section works with personnel from the Missile Defense
Agency (MDA), Joint National Integration Lab (JNIC), Joint Early Warning Lab
(JEWL), and National Air & Space Intelligence Center (NASIC). Team members analyze
U.S. and foreign space and missile launch events to evaluate timing and accuracy
performance of U.S. missile warning systems.
Highlights/Benefits: The USAMS Missile Warning Team is heavily
engaged in key aspects of defense of the U.S., our military personnel around the
world, and our foreign allies. Team members also work closely with Missile Defense
Agency and Joint Theater Air and Missile Defense Organization (JTAMDO) personnel
and contractors to ensure missile defense systems under development will work
efficiently and effectively with existing missile warning systems. The expertise
team members provide to the Department of Defense is invaluable, as professed by
the customer and organizations and agencies team members interact with on a daily
basis.
