Contract to hold jobs at Offutt
|
Mar 25, 2008 |
The $239 million Air Force Weather Agency pact won by Northrop Grumman will maintain
about 200 civilian positions.
A $239 million Air Force Weather Agency contract will keep about 200 civilian contracting jobs at the
agency's Offutt Air Force Base headquarters.
The contract, won this month by Northrop Grumman, is for maintenance and technical support for the
computer systems the agency uses to forecast and distribute weather reports to military commanders
worldwide.
The deal could mean a few dozen more jobs for Northrop and other local contractors at Offutt over
the next five years, said Al Ronn, director of environmental business for the company's Bellevue
office.
"As the Air Force has made reductions in manpower in the last few years, they've become more
and more reliant on contractors," Ronn said. "We anticipate 10 to 20 percent growth based on
this contract in the next five years."
Northrop Grumman has about 120 employees working at Offutt today on the contract, Ronn said.
Several local defense firms - including CSSS.NET, Sumaria Systems, Sterling Computers, and
Software Engineering Services - fill another 80 subcontracted positions.
In addition to routine maintenance and technical support, the new contract aims to make sure the
weather agency is able to provide forecasts through a move and a computer system upgrade, said
Tony Leute, the agency's deputy director of strategic plans and programs.
Over the next five years, the agency plans to upgrade the supercomputers that power its forecasts
and will lean on contractors to ensure the forecasting doesn't lag during the switch, Leute said.
Next month, the weather agency will begin moving into a new $27 million headquarters at Offutt,
said Miles Brown, an agency spokesman.
The contract includes the technical support to keep forecasts on schedule as the agency moves
into its new 188,000-square-foot headquarters.
"We can't just go away on vacation from forecasting for a couple of weeks," Leute said.
The Air Force Weather Agency has more than 1,400 military and civilian personnel stationed at
20 sites around the world and a $183 million annual budget. About 600 military specialists
and civilians work for the agency at Offutt.

June 28, 2007 |
GREATER DES MOINES - Software Engineering Services (SES), an Omaha-based firm
providing leading-edge IT solutions for the U.S. Department of Defense and other federal
and state government agencies, announced that it will expand its commercial consulting
business in West Des Moines. The company will add about 40 software consulting, sales,
support and administrative positions throughout 2007.
Sam Mandolfo, Director of Global Commercial Consulting for the firm, said SES considered
about a dozen different factors in its expansion plans. Research into the regional market here
showed a need for the firm's technology staffing, systems integration, enterprise security and
systems/software development services, among others.
"The company has traditionally served the government and Defense Department markets,
and we're expanding our reach into the commercial markets in several U.S. cities," Mandolfo
